Fortunes and Failures
White-Collar Mobility in Nineteenth-Century San Francisco
A study in social mobility within the merchant class of this west coast city from 1849-1880. Using federal and sate census records, city directories, newspaper reports, diaries, letter, R.G. Dun and Company ledgers, and other sources, Decker traces the origins and careers of merchants and other workers who were lured to San Francisco in the nineteenth century and found success or suffered failure.
A volume in the Harvard Studies in Urban History, 1978.
